Lent 2017

LENT

Lenten and easter services

ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE - Wednesday, Mar. 1 (7:00 p.m.)

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of our Lenten Journey and draws us into Christ’s suffering, death, and resurrection.  This worship service allows us to walk through the journey of Christ - learning how Christ’s death brings us life and how Christ’s suffering moves us to love and action.

MAUNDY THURSDAY - Thursday, Apr. 13 (7:00 p.m.)

In preparation for Easter, join us as we worship God, hear the story of Christ’s death, and celebrate communion.  Just as Christ shared this meal with the disciples before his death, we are reminded of Christ’s love for us as we worship together and understand the reality of both death and resurrection.

EASTER MORNING WORSHIP - Sunday, Apr. 16 (10:00 a.m.)

Easter morning we celebrate resurrection and the truth of God’s saving grace for each of us.  Join us for worship as we claim the promise of hope and the gift of God’s redemptive love for all.  Christ is risen!  He is risen indeed!  Hallelujah and Amen!

Classes and bible study

ADULT ED CLASS: LENTEN PRACTICES (Preparing for Easter) - Sunday, Mar. 5 (11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.)

What is Lent?  Does it matter to me today?  Many people use this time to focus on their relationship with Jesus.  Join Pastor Steve for lunch and conversation about ideas to draw us near to our Lord.

RSVP to office@oppc.org required by Wednesday, Mar. 1

$5 suggested donation for lunch.

SIX-WEEK LENTEN BIBLE STUDY: The Big Picture of the Bible - Tuesdays (beginning Mar. 7)(1:00 - 2:00 p.m.)

Join us on Tuesday, Mar. 7 in the library for an overview of the Bible’s whole story.  Led by Pastor Steve, learn where familiar stories fit in the Big Picture and see them in a new light!  In this six-week Lenten study, we will learn the big picture of the whole Bible - a 10,000 foot view of God’s story with us.  Get a handle on the Bible’s story and discover how the stories you remember from Sunday School fit into the big picture.

lenten devotionals

Lenten Devotionals will be available in the church narthex starting Ash Wednesday.

A WONDROUS LOVE: DAILY LENTEN MEDITATIONS AND PRAYERS by Henri J.M. Nouwen and C.S. Lewis

Two of the most widely read and respected spiritual writers of the 20th century, Henri J.M. Nouwen and C.S. Lewis, are brought together in this daily devotional booklet.  Nouwen and Lewis offer their deeply personal insights, understanding and pastoral sensitivity in this booklet that is an ideal accompaniment for a spiritually enriching Lenten season.  Beginning on Ash Wednesday, each day includes a brief line of Scripture, a reflection drawn from one of the many classic books by Nouwen and Lewis, and short prayer.  Our hope is that this booklet will help make your Lenten journey one to remember.

Lent for Everyone by N.T. Wright

For our Season of Lent, you are invited to deepen your study as we read Lent for Everyone, A Daily Devotional through the Gospel of Mark by N.T. Wright.  Copies of this devotional are available for $10 in the Church Office.  Beginning Ash Wednesday, immerse yourself in Christ's journey as you read, reflect, and explore all God has for us during this Lenten Season.

ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING ~You Shall Be Called Repairers of the Breach - Isaiah 58

One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) is a direct response to God’s call in Isaiah 58 - to loose the bonds of injustice, share our bread with the hungry, and satisfy the needs of the afflicted.  Because of your generous support of OGHS, people around the world receive the resources they need to help them improve their lives. With your gift, you loose the bonds on injustice, share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into a house.  Thank you for being a part of PC(USA)’s answer to God’s call.
